Root Canal Treatment

Overview

Modern root canal treatment saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost, and it’s nothing like its reputation.

The procedure removes infected tissue from inside the tooth, relieving pain rather than causing it. We work slowly and carefully under local anaesthetic, and you stay in control throughout, so most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is.

When it’s needed

• Persistent toothache or pain when biting

• Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold

• Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gum

• A deep cavity or crack that has reached the nerve

What to expect

Treatment usually takes one or two visits. We clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, then seal it to prevent further infection. We’ll talk you through each step before we begin, so there are no surprises.

Afterwards the tooth is often protected with a crown to keep it strong. Any tenderness in the first day or two settles quickly and is easily managed with ordinary pain relief.

Why save the tooth?

Keeping your natural tooth is almost always better than removing it. It protects your bite, your other teeth, and your jawbone, and it works out more cost-effective than a replacement in the long run.
